Tips for Parents to Ensure the Safety of your Child!

Your children mean the world to you and you would do anything to keep them safe, won’t you? That is why it is very important to discuss what you need to do to ensure the safety of your child.

As we all know, children aged 3-5 years are adventurous and ambitious. They love to learn through trying and experimenting. This is an important and a much needed phase of growth. However, being too adventurous could expose them to certain dangers, they don’t fully grasp. So it's the role of the parent to help create an environment where they can grow and learn safely, without hinderances. Let’s look at some of the most common dangers children this age face, and steps you can take to protect them.

Poisoning

Children of this age are curious about everything. It is normal to be tempted to put anything into their mouth, including poison! It is your responsibility as an adult to ensure that your children do not have access to medicines, cleaning products or other toxic products.

Burns

  • During this time, children are quick to touch things with their little fingers. You do not want them touching fire, right mum and dad?
  • Be sure to keep your child in a safe place when you are cooking or ironing clothes.
  • Turn the handles of dishes that are in the stove/cooker so they do not stick out.
  • Keep matchboxes, lighters, and candles away from children.
  • Keep warm foods and hot liquids out of reach of your kids as much as possible.
  • Don't carry your children while handling hot meals/boiling water.
  • Be aware of fire exits in buildings you frequent.

Falls

This is the most common type of accidents that children this age face. These stubborn children can fall off almost anything including tables, stairs, and many other places. As a parent, you must stay vigilant and alert to spot these dangers.

  • Lock doors to block access to dangerous areas such as the basement or attic.
  • Keep safety gates/barriers that will prevent a child from accessing stairs without an adult present.
  • Keep all windows closed and secure.
  • Be alert when your child is playing.

Choking

Children aged 3-5 years are susceptible to getting choked.

  • Be careful when feeding your baby.
  • Keep coins, buttons, small batteries (and toys) out of reach.

We know you understand the importance of looking after your children. Yet, it’s easy to lose track of what your child is doing given your busy lifestyles. However, a moment’s carelessness can have long-lasting impacts. So do your best to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of your precious ones. They depend on you!
